BUY LESS WEAR MORE / TRANSITIONAL DRESSING

Transitional dressing can always be a bit tricky, especially when the weather won’t make up it’s mind. It can be made much easier when you own a few wardrobe staples that can transform your Summer wardrobe into Autumn and your Winter wardrobe into Spring. Here are a few of the pieces that I find most useful when dressing for the in-between days.

Outfit Ideas

Key Pieces

A classic trench coat - my favourite length is mid calf, if in doubt go up a size and if you ant to wear it closed then tie your belt in a knot.

White trainers - they go with everything and are brilliant at dressing down the smarter items in your wardrobe.

A classic blazer - Buy in brown, navy or grey depending on what works with the tones in your wardrobe. Wear over summer dresses, a tee or a lighter jumper and jeans. Instantly smartens up a look.

A great neutral jumper - Such an easy piece to style, wear with tailored trousers and trainers, jeans, with a bias cut silk skirt or over a dress.

A jumper dress - There is something so laid back and cool about an over-sized jumper / dress and chunky flat boots, I really like this look and its worth investing the time in finding the perfect colour / knit and length that works with your style / frame.

A denim jacket - I love this one by Sezane as its a good length and also feels smarter than the more classic versions, I own this in white and wear A LOT so am thinking about investing in the blue.

Suede Clogs - These work in the same way as trainers do, they can make an outfit feel instantly more relaxed, wear with socks in the colder months.

A classic cardigan - I love a good cardigan and they really are the perfect item to add to a look when the weather can’t make up its mind.

Nice socks - It’s worth having some socks that you don’t mind the world seeing and in a tone that works with the majority of colours in your wardrobe, also great on a more practical level if you want to continue to wear cropped denim / trousers into the colder months, for the most flattering look wear socks a few shades lighter or darker and in the same colour as the trousers you want to style them with.

The statement cardigan - wear it as you would a jacket, simple.

Cream wide leg cords - the Autumn / Winter version of the white denim you wore all Summerr, great if you find yourself wear lighter denim a lot and want something that feels a bit more cosy, I love the texture of cord esp when you wear them in and they become soft and a bit creased. They look superb worn with layered fine knits.

A denim shirt - again like the statement cardigan wear it like you would a jacket over a tee or vest, also looks great under a chunky jumper when it gets colder.

Nautical jumper - If you like a Breton tee then this is a must for your Autumn wardrobe.

A white long sleeved tee - buy over-sized and be prepared to wear it to death, I have 2 in my wardrobe as I found that I was wearing so much.

Riding boots - Flat boots are so practical for Winter but they are also a great addition to make to your wardrobe now, wear with pretty summer dresses and chunky cardigans or an over-sized sweater / jumper dress. I like them when they are loose around your legs and feel a bit baggy, much more flattering, the pair below by Free People really are the best I’ve tried and work well all year round.

A Breton Long-Sleeved Tee - There is something about a stripe that pulls together lots of pieces that I’ve added to this list, great to have on hand when you need to add an extra layer and want something that feels classic but with a bit more personality than a white tee.
